2 dage vandring til Mt Gingilos og Agia Irini Gorge
1.
dag
"We drive to the plateau of Omalos and stop at the entrance
of the
Samaria gorge. The mountain right in front of us, Mt. Gingilos,
is one
of the most impressive summits of Crete and possesses the second
highest vertical cliff in the whole of Greece.
Despite the
mountain's intimidating appearance it is quite easy to reach the
summit by following a path which takes us around the cliff face.
The views on the way are very impressive, plunging deep into
the gorge of Samaria and looking across it towards the center
of the White Mountains and the summits of Pachnes.
For those who do not
quite feel up to the summit walk, it is easy to stop on the way,
either at the spring of Linoseli or on the saddle and still have
a beautiful and satisfying walk.
The final climb to
the 2080 m summit requires a little bit more sure-footedness but
is rewarded with stunning views of both north and south
coasts of the island. On most days you can see large birds
of prey circling near the mountain, even sometimes bearded
vultures and golden eagles.
We will spend the
night at a hotel in the village of Omalos and continue the walk
next day.
2.
dag
We return to the plateau following the same path. The Agia
Irini gorge is not very far from Omalos: the beginning of it is about
1 hours walk towards the West, then about 3 hours down the gorge
to the sea.
The
route is straight forward and follows a dried-up riverbed. Although
a lot of efforts have been made to make the Irini gorge more
accessible, there are still some difficult parts which
makes walking the gorge much more fun for the adventurous
hiker than the "paved" Samaria gorge.
